Diary: a Day in the Life of a Sun Seeking Spanish Student

As much as I crave the sun, wish to eat tasty tapas and desire to drink cold cervezas, I actually have work to do while I'm out in Mallorca.

I am currently studying the spanish language and culture in a bit more depth at the Universitat de les Illes Balears. So far I completely love it, the teacher is fantastic and work is manageable.

Here is how my day pans out:

7.am:
Me despierto. Waking up will always be the hardest part of my day but when there is a freshly brewed coffee waiting to be drunk on the dinning table, this task is a lot easier.

8.am:
I head off to work with my aunt and uncle, it's only about a 15minute car journey.

8.30am:
From my aunts work I walk in to the city and there is enough time for a spot of reading and some more coffee at one of the many local cafes in the area.

9.30am -2pm:
This is when all the hard work happens. I won't go into detail because unless you are spanish obsessed like I am, it might send you snoozing!

2pm-3.45pm:
This is my time to do as I please. I can go home (the bus is so cheap and quick it really rivals those in London) or go shopping. Yesterday I did the latter, stopping briefly at las Ramblas to eat the bocadillo my uncle made for me in the morning. Wondering along the shaded streets of Palma is one of the most beautiful things you could do in your life. Each shop has the ambience of a quaint boutique and it can't be helped but to leisurely stroll from one tienda to another. On my way back to base I managed to pick  up this adorable bunch of flowers for my aunt. There was far too many to choose from, fresh, vibrant and with such a delicate scent I wish I could have bought them all!

By about 4.30pm, after all the errands are run and the kids collected, we're home. But seeing as yesterday was a friday and the sun beams down until late in the evening, it would have been rude not to go to the beach...

Ok, who I am I trying to kid, this is totally the life!

10 Reasons To Love Mallorca

Ok, so I had a realisation: If you don't know me in person, then how are you going to comprehend my love for a tiny island, which has as little as 869,000 inhabitants?

So here is a post to explain my enchantment with the very special island that is Mallorca...

10. Diversity

Whether you like lying on the beach, enticing a thrill from windsurfing, climbing mountains, cycling along winding country roads, Mallorca has everything you could ever wish for. Personally I love relaxing by the sea, there is nothing better than spreading a towel over the white sand and settling down with a good book! This week alone I started and finished Lady of the Rivers by Philipa Gregory, fantastic read about the War of the Roses.

9. Weather
Mallorca has the perfect climate in my opinion. In the summer the sky blazes blue and the sun looks down on you with a glorious smile. In winter, it is much the same, except the sun is much more delicate on my fair skin and you get cool shelter from the passing clouds. I remember spending christmas here some years ago, thrilled at the prospects of not needing a coat.

8. People
Kind, sociable, friendly and passionate are just some words you could use to describe the people of Mallorca. Every man, woman and child is more than willing to spark up a conversation if you so desire. Mallorquins are whole heartedly passionate in their interests, whether that be politics, sport or daily life.

7. History
There is lot of history, some dating back to the AD era. Hence, there is no lack of museums, artefacts, ruins and writings. One of my favourite activities is to get the train from Palma to Soller. This is no ordinary train, running a continual service since 1912, it is a fantastic way to experience Mallorca as it would have been at the turn of the century, as well to as see what beauty the countryside holds.

6. Culture
Due to point 7, the history, Mallorca is a cauldron for culture. From Moorish ruins to composers, nature reserves to churches, there is always something fascinating to be found. Examples of cultural places to visit include the Banys Arabs (Arab Baths) in the city and the Chopin museum in Valldemossa. You can also spend time appreciating the painter Joan Miro at the Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro a Mallorca, who died on the island in the 1980s.

5. Food
Now I love food, but Spanish cuisine is on another level. The thing is Mallorca can create treats such as ensaimadas which cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. Whether it's the water, the flour or something else, the breakfast favourites are one of a kind. Also, there's trampo Mallorquin, which I have tried to make in my Surrey kitchen on numerous occasions but can never quite get the base right.

Anyone for Paella?

4. Language
Of course Spanish is spoken here but so is Mallorquin. The catalan language has a great sound to it and there is nothing more heart warming than to hear than a couple of abuelas talking to each other in this traditional dialect over a coffee. Fingers crossed I can learn some more this month!

3. Beaches
I think the beaches can speak for themselves:

Puerto Alcudia

Arenal

Cala Mondrago

2. Palma
This is where I would live if I had the funds to support myself. Steeped in history, the narrow streets lead you around the maze which is the city centre. Beautifully old buildings loom over you, with many in the old quarter having rooftop views of La Seu, the Cathedral and the busy port which is always host to huge cruise liners and stunning yachts. There's also cafes, restaurants, shops, even a university! Everything you could ever need.

1. My Family
I have family here, making this the most important reason for me to love this wonderful island.

Bienvenida de Mallorca

Bon Dia!

As you may already know from previous posts I am spending a large chunk of summer in my homeland Mallorca. For the first week my oldest and most dearest friend has come with me to see why I am so in love with this tiny island, and I think she's becoming as besotted as I. Just thought I would fill you in over breakfast with what we've been up to...

Cafe solo y agua

On Tuesday we arrived at 9am which was perfect as my Aunty over here had taken some holiday so we got a full day together and could visit my Granny and Aunt in Cala Mondrago, a nature reserve which has the most beautiful plants and playas which you will ever see. A great introduction to Mallorca for my friend.  Although by the time we got back to my cousin's, a place where I shall call home for the next month, we were exhausted. I don't think I've ever survived on 2 hours sleep before!!

Cala Mondrago
Cala Blava

The rest of the days we have been taking care of my little cousins, running errands and of course going to the beach. Except for yesterday when we went to Palma, the capital of my heart. We met my Granny and Aunt there and spent the day drinking fanta limon, sampling some tapas and going to some amazing shops. Once we tired of this we popped into a relatives house who proceeded to take us to see the most exquisite views of the city via the most dangerous mountain roads I have ever experienced!

The Heat Premiere

I returned to London sooner than expected. We managed to snag two tickets to the gala screening of Sandra Bullock's new movie, The Heat, courtesy of OK! Magazine.

In the end I only had an hour to get ready, so setting my hair in heated rollers, I started working on the warpaint. Just the other day I tweeted about these fabulous new shoes which deserved a special occasion and last night was the perfect opportunity.

My new super pink lipstick

The screening was at the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair. The red carpet looked majestic, full of people awaiting the celebrities, along side the hoards of press. We sauntered down, showed our tickets and headed for our seats.

Red carpet et al

We had great seats, central and close to the front

At our seats was a huge bar of Green and Blacks milk chocolate and a bottle of water, which was handy while we waited for Alex Zane to introduce the director, the great Paul Feig and the surprisingly funny Sandra Bullock. I love Feig, he reminds me of an american Bill Nighy in his mannerisms and ease with the audience. Sandra Bullock was gorgeous, engaging and had the cutest pair of heels.

Also in attendance was the comedy duo Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo; Game of Thrones beauty Natalie Dormer; ex Made in Chelsea temptress Kimberly Garner and sat just behind us was the entertaining Bradley Walsh.

There is two things which people who know me will appreciate, firstly I am RUBBISH at celeb spotting. I live in my own little world and even if Channing Tatum bumped into me in the street I can guarantee I would be none the wiser, muttering under my breath about manners and personal space.

The second thing is it is rare for me to EVER sit through a movie. Like EVER, EVER. I get bored, wonder off, check my phone etc. So understandably I was expecting pretty much the same from this movie. Ohhhh was I wrong! It was fantastic, eye watering-ly, laugh out loud funny. The plot consisted of a socially awkward FBI agent who gets moved to Boston to solve a case, where she meets the hysterical Detective Mullins, played by Melissa McCarthy.

A must watch!

When we left all I could see was flashing lights and hear people scuffling to get to the front. Yeah, you heard it... we got pap'ed! It's amazing where a bright lippy and killer pair of heels can get you. Does that mean I'm officially a Z-lister?!

Poser!

The outcome of the movie has resulted in me wanting to be an FBI agent. Oh, and go to more red carpet events of course!

The Heat is a must see this summer. For those interested, here is the trailer:

It was a fantastic evening, although I think I need to head back down to earth pretty soon. Especially considering it is only 12 days until I head to Mallorca for the summer. I'm going for some drinks by the river with my bestie this afternoon, so maybe I'll ground myself tomorrow...

Take care,

Luxurious London

My life as an undergraduate is now officially over. The exams are done and the daily commute to London is over after 3 long, chaotic and life changing years. A friend had won a competition for entry into Scala at Kings Cross that night, so we hit up London to end things on a high. Unfortunately, I was exhausted after all the intense studying but luckily dad offered to pick my friend and I up at 1.30am, not quite seeing the exams out as imagined!

However, my sister and I sure made up for it at the weekend. To celebrate the end of exams and because we are not going on holiday together this year, we decided to go to Polo in the Park at Hurlingham. We also had the glorious idea of checking in for two nights at the Millennium and Copthorne Hotel at Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea FC. BLISS! As some of you may know my sister struggles to leave the house often due to her disability, hence why the hotel meant we had a suitable base nearby if the weekend got too much at any point. Having a sister with a disability isn't all doom and gloom, it has some 4 star highlights..

Who doesn't love Torres?!

On friday we thought we would put the Merlin Pass to use and take a spin on the London Eye. I hadn't been on there since 2001 when it was still a new sight in the capital. The Eye didn't disappoint at all, glorious sunshine meant fantastic views and the atmosphere in the 'pod' is so calm, it was lovely and relaxing.

Although the next day is what I really wanted  to talk to you about. Mint Polo at the Park. AMAZING! I do love a trip to the polo, but Hurlingham was chukka blocked (haha, see what I did there?!). Full of beautiful people drinking Pimms, champagne and cocktails from my favourite London bar, Mahiki's. Luckily we had Grandstand tickets so we didn't miss a match and kept out of the way of the bustling crowds.

Treading Grass, Oh So Polo...

The teams comprised of Sydney, Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Moscow and of course, London. Sadly, the second match of the day got caught short after one of the players was thrown from his horse mid play and rushed to hospital. It was very scary, probably more so for his family. Either way, apparently he is fine now which is what matters.

It was getting all a bit too exhausting for my sister, so we hailed a cab and headed back for some hearty room service courtesy of Frankie's

Mum, take note...
Cocktails delivered to your door? Yes please.

It was a fabulous weekend and a perfect way to see out 3 years in the Big City. I'm not sure when I'll be back again, but London, it was a pleasure.

Exam Breakdown

So I take it we have all been there, that dreaded moment, where you are sat biting at your nails, blurry eyed, wondering why you ever chose to do a degree?

Well I had one of those moments, except it wasn't just the one, it felt like it was my entire week. Luckily my lovely mummy took me out for a coffee and a gluten free beetroot cake (much nicer than it sounds, I promise). Finally, I was back on track... Until today, when instead it's a mental block. Even just looking at a page of notes gives me a headache. Remind me why we do this to ourselves?

Oh yesss, a degree accompanied by the gloried hope of a first. I already want my results and I haven't done my last exam yet!!

In brighter news, this time next week I'll be returning home after a luxury stay in London! Two nights in a 5 Star hotel and an afternoon of polo is totes' what the doctor ordered.

Anyway, back to the grindstone. I am going to leave you with a couple of photos of my woof's to brighten up your day.

Good luck to everyone taking exams at the moment,

The Learned Rose x
